Delhi – The Red Fort and a Late Night Food Tour

After another amazing and very filling home cooked breakfast we headed up to the Red Fort in Old Delhi. As it was a Friday and the main day at the Jama Mosjid, the largest Mosque in India, we were dropped at the station and made our way up by Metro. A pleasant experience until we got to the busier stations when everyone crammed on, luckily we managed to survive the crush and after a brief stop at the wrong station we made it to our destination. The Red Fort isn’t as grand or as well preserved as other Forts we’d visited in India but it was still an interesting visit, there was also a museum on Independence that was worth a visit. But best of all for us today was the one day that it was free entry to everyone, due to it being World Hertiage Week.

After a brief stop off at Connaught Place again we headed back to get ready for the tour that our local hosts had lined up for us that evening – one that you wouldn’t find in any guide book! After a few drinks (Mark drunk a few Scotches like the locals) we headed out for some food just before midnight. We sped through the deserted streets of New Delhi, a completely different city from a few hours before when traffic chocked the wide boulevards. Our first stop was a local favourite which we were promised had the most amazing Tandoori chicken, and we weren’t disappointed! We got our order and like everyone else ate on the bonnet of the car.. it truly was the most succulent chicken we had ever tasted.

Before our next stop on the culinary tour we made a quick stop at the best Paan place in Delhi which we were to sample after the savoury part was over, first though we headed to best Parathas place in New Delhi, again it exceeded expectations. As we ate on the bonnet of the car a fellow diner next to us seemed to be amazed to see some tourists there.

After sampling the paan on route (a floral tasting concoction wrapped in a beetle leaf) we made it to our final stop at the side of the road for homemade ice blocks. The ice shavings were dipped it in an Indian salt and then squirted with a syrup to make a strange salty sweet, definitely acquired taste. Then we whizzed through the streets again and it was time to head back.
