Arriving in Delhi

We arrived on the overnight train from Udaipur at around 6.30am. We had arranged to stay with Manmeet and Sanmeet, some local Delhi-ites that Andrea knew through work. They had arranged to have a driver meet us at the train station so our arrival into Delhi was very easy, hassle free and probably a far cry from most tourists first experiences of Delhi. We also had the driver for our stay, it was definitely a treat being driven around in an air conditioned 4WD rather than the local auto rickshaws we’d become accustomed to – how quickly you adjust though!

After a delicious home cooked breakfast of parathas we set out for some of the New Delhi sights. First stop was Qutb Minar Complex which has an amazing tower built in 1199 as well as ruins from Mosques and tombs.

From there we headed to the Lotus Temple, a temple built out of white marble in the shape of a lotus leaf. Home of the Baha’i religion in India, originally from Persia it’s belief revolves around the unification of the human race of all religions who can pray together in there 9 sided temples.

We then stopped off at the India Gate for some photos (as well as being asked to pose for a few photos with Indian tourists) on route to Connaught place, one of main shopping areas in New Delhi. It has an impressive circle of shops, one in an inner circle and one in the outer with an array of tailors. After visiting several, Mark got measured up for a tailor made suit – a bargain price to anything you‘d get in London!

After a final stop at the Gurudwara Bangla Sahib Sikh temple we headed back through the New Delhi traffic to the house in South Delhi, again we were treated to some amazing home cooking and went to bed feeling very full!
